No New Shoes!

English funeral director Barry Dyer describes his job as a sacred trust. People give their loved ones to him to prepare for burial.

He can't stand to put new shoes on the person being buried. He just doesn't feel it's  the right thing to do. He says the new shoes will never walk anywhere, and insists on burying people in  a pair of shoes that have been walking with the person in life.

Just discovered your blog. You should read (if you haven't) The Mourner's Dance: What We Do When People Die by Katherine Ashenberg (2002).
